Planery Talk by Professor Dieter Bimberg at CLEO Pacific Rim 2026

"Reducing energy consumption of data centers by novel design of VCSELs and CMOS-based drivers"
The talk addresses the rapidly rising energy consumption of global data‑center traffic by developing ultra‑efficient VCSEL technologies and photonic modules.
We demonstrate record‑low energy‑per‑bit performance (<100 fJ/bit) using advanced VCSEL concepts such as MUHA‑1, MUHA‑2, and multi‑aperture designs, enabling 400+ Gbit/s transmission over OM5 fiber.
Current efforts integrate these VCSELs with next‑generation CMOS drivers to achieve highly energy‑efficient optical interconnects for future large‑scale data‑center architectures.
