Professor Dieter Bimberg wins the 2019 IEEE Jun-ichi Nishizawa Medal

Prof. Dieter Bimberg, Director of "Bimberg Chinese-German Center for Green Photonics" at Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics, and Physics (CIOMP) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences won the prestigeous 2019 IEEE Jun-ichi Nishizawa Medal from the US Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, IEEE. 

IEEE says that Prof. Bimberg, together with Prof. Pallab Bhattacharya of the University of Michigan and Prof. Yasuhiko Arakawa of the University of Tokyo, are honored for their “pioneering and continued efforts” which “enabled the scientific and technological marvel known as the quantum dot (QD) laser, which is replacing semiconductor lasers in a growing range of areas including optical communications, medical and industrial applications, and silicon photonics.”
 
According to IEEE, the successful operation of the QD laser depends on the realization of nanostructured atom-like quantum dots in the gain region, but the technology for this did not exist. Professor Bimberg, solved this problem to create such injection lasers that have vastly superior characteristics compared to traditional semiconductor lasers.

Prof. Bimberg demonstrated the first low temperature and room temperature injection lasers based on self-organized quantum dots both by MBE and MOCVD. He pioneered the general effective mass, 8-band k.p-and many particle theories of quantum dots presenting the basis to understand the electronic, optical and transport properties of QDs and QD-baseddevices. His fundamental discovery of the relevance of strain for self-organized growth, established novel growth technologies for devices with properties superior to those of quantum-well structures and was the first to demonstrate these advantages both for continuous wave as well as pulsed applications . Thus the basis for the development of advanced systems for data- and telecommunications and quantum communication was laid.
The Bimberg Chinese-German Center for Green Photonics was jointly established in April, 2018 by CIOMP, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Professor Dieter Bimberg, an academician of the German Academy of Sciences, the US National Academy of Engineering, the Russian and EU Academies of Sciences, and the US National Academy of Inventors.
The research of the Bimberg Center focuses on quantum devices, including high bit rate and energy efficient vertical cavity surface emitting lasers for optical computer interconnects. long-wavelength quantum dot HIBBEE laser technology for next-generation LiDAR, and mode-locked quantum dot lasers for future Terabit/sec metro communication.
The IEEE Medals are the highest awards presented on behalf of the IEEE Board of Directors. The IEEE Jun-ichi Nishizawa Medal was established in 2002 in honor of Jun-ichi Nishizawa’s lifetime of outstanding achievements ranging from fundamental semiconductor materials and devices through optical communication and power systems.
Considered the “Father of Japanese Microelectronics,” Nishizawa was a professor, director of two research institutes and the 17th president of Tohoku University, Japan. He received 28 national and international awards in his lifetime. IEEE Spectrum recognized him as one of the geniuses of the 20th century. The Jun-ichi Nichizawa Medal is sponsored by The Federation of Electric Power Companies in Japan.

Innovations have enabled the realization of the scientific and technological marvel known as the quantum dot laser, which is replacing semiconductor lasers in a growing range of areas including optical communications, medical and industrial applications, and high-definition displays.
